Descripción
The overall objective of the NECTALIS 3 cruise is studying intermediate trophic levels in pelagic ecosystem: characterizing the environment, acoustics, sampling and modelling of zooplankton and micronekton in New Caledonia. The Nectalis 3 cruise contributes to explore the southern area of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of New Caledonia in the south-west Pacific to collect data and samples on the pelagic ecosystem where tuna swim, particularly albacore tuna.
Registros

Zooplankton is composed mainly of crustaceans measuring between 0.2mm and 2cm. Micronekton, which forms the food of tuna, is constituted of larger organisms: fish, shrimps or squids measuring between 2 and 20cm.

Datos del proyecto
The NECTALIS3 project studies the mid-trophic levels of the pelagic ecosystem of New-Caledonia: zooplankton and micronekton. Those components are the link between physical/chemical factors which influence their distribution and abundance, and fish exploited resources, particularly tuna, which are their predators. To complement a larger project based on observations, technology and modelling, we propose a multidisciplinary cruise to collect sea water physical and chemical data as well as data on zooplankton and micronekton. To characterise physico-chemical conditions and primary production, we measure temperature, salinity, oxygen, fluorescence, light, currents, nutrients, photosynthetic pigments, phytoplankton abundance, primary production, phytoplanktonic communities. Secondary production (zooplankton, micronekton) is measured with acoustic (TAPS, S-ADCP, L-ADCP, EK60) and net sampling of zooplankton and micronekton. This cruise is complemented by physical, chemical and biogeochemical modelling, by tuna diet study and by modelling of the pelagic ecosystem including several sub-models. Specialists in dynamic, acoustic, biogeochemistry, oceanography, biology and fisheries coming from different research institutions collect, analyse and model observations on the mid-trophic levels. We have two goals: 1) sustainable fish resources management with the improvement of our understanding of spatio-temporal distribution and behaviors of the tuna preys to eventually better understand tuna-environment relationships 2) conservation and protection of offshore waters by providing new information on pelagic biodiversity to contribute to the identification of ecologically and biologically significant areas in the Caledonian EEZ.

Métodos de muestreo
Based on acoustic signal of EK60 we used a mesopelagic midwater trawl (Micronekton pelagic trawl 24mx24m) to target acoustic layers and collect micronekton organisms.

Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:
- Three methods were used to estimate zooplankton (organisms 2 µm – 20 mm) biomass: a Tracor Acoustic Profiling System (TAPS), net sampling and Ship-Borne Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (S-ADCP).
- Three methods were used to estimate micronekton (organisms 2 - 20 cm) biomass and species composition: using an EK60 echosounder, net sampling and the S-ADCP
