Description
Fish communities in the lagoon of the Tikehau atoll were studied by only a few researchers. Harmelin-Viven (1984) studied the distribution of the main herbivorous families (Scaridae and Acanthuridae) in the lagoon and on the outer slope to 30 m in depth. The total fish community of the outer slope was studied by Galzin (1985, 1987) at 12 m in depth. These studies were carried out in the southwestern part of the atoll. This dataset contains fish records from these studies as well as artisanal fishery over the 1982, 1983 and 1987 fisheries years.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 642 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

To study the fish communities of Tikehau, two complementary were used: visual census and rotenone poisoning.

Method step description:
- Many synthesis (GBRMPA, 1987; Barans and Bortone, 1983; Harmelin-Vivien et al., 1985) describe the method for estimating in situ fish communities and populations using visual census. These methods, widely used on coral reefs, enable scientists to study fish communities without perturbation. In the Tikehau atoll, visual censuses were carried out the SCUBA diving on 50 m length and 5 m with transects. The transects on the outer slope and the inner reef flat were parallel to the reef. Fish hidden in reef shelter and in sediment were caught with ichtyotoxic rotenone. The two methods were used to study fish communities in the lagoon, but only visual censuses were used on the outer slope.
