Description

This dataset contains occurrence records for specimens held by the Marine Collection, an aquatic natural history collection, at The University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.

A large component of records are from Fiji, however, there are records from different South Pacific island countries. Marine biodiversity collections and recording started in the late 1960s and continues to the present day. Freshwater records started in the 2000s and this database grows annually.

Records before the year 2000 do not have GPS coordinates, however, locality descriptions are provided. A future georeferencing project is planned to address this.

Data mobilisation is supported by the BID Pacific project "Mobilizing biodiversity data from natural history collections in Fiji" (BID-PA-2020-006-NAC), and the British Academy funded Youth Futures project "(Re)Defining Culture: Engaging urban Fijian youth in sustainable employment opportunities in the cultural heritage sector (YF\190078).

This dataset will be updated regularly.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,564 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

The main objective of our project is to mobilize natural history collection data housed in both government and non-government institutions in Fiji. These include collections held at the South Pacific Regional Herbarium and the Discipline of Marine Studies, both located at the University of the South Pacific, and the Fijian Ministries of Forestry and Agriculture.
